Workshop 4 Delay
Development of Workshop 4, "Making
the Case for Suicide Preventability" is ongoing but has encountered
some delays along the way due to changes in the workshop content
and its objectives. We are committed to rolling out this next workshop
in our series and doing pilot testing as soon as possible. Future
updates will be posted here. In the meantime, if you have any questions
about our next workshop and how you can participate please email

Workshop 4 is Coming
in 2005!
Happy New Year to everyone!
Apologies for the long delay in communication since August. Indeed
work is still going on and lots of changes are happening. NCSPT
has undergone some minor reorganization since teaming with the Suicide
Prevention Resource Center (SPRC) in June (See June's What's New
message below). In September, NCSPT's main office moved from the
Education Development Center in Newton, MA to the Harvard School
of Public Health in Boston. The Boston office is working on completing
development of workshop 4 so that it can be pilot tested in Spring
05. A satellite office located at the SPRC in Newton is working
to transfer online Workshops 1, 2, and 3 over to a new platform
that is more user friendly. Watch for a re-release of these workshops
in the coming months. In the meantime, registration is still available
using the existing platform. Please go to the workshops page for
more information. Stay tuned for updates in the coming weeks! Until
then be safe and enjoy the new year.

New workshops in the
making!
NCSPT has recently been awarded funds to develop two
additional workshops. The first workshop, the fourth in the series,
will be called Prevention Works: Making the Case for the
Preventability of Suicide. The workshop will highlight
the research evidence underpinning the claim that suicide is a preventable
public health problem. It will prepare students to speak more authoritatively
and convincingly to the media, the public, and policy makers on
the preventability of youth suicide. More information to follow...

NCSPT to team-up with
SPRC!
NCSPT has completed its 3-year contract with the Health
Resources Services Administration (HRSA). During this time, more
than 1,300 people from across the United States and in several countries
participated in three online workshops. In order to continue the
workshop series, NCSPT is working collaboratively with the Suicide
Prevention Resource Center (SPRC), based at the Education Development
Center, Inc. (EDC) in Newton, MA. As of June 2004, NCSPT workshops
will be administered by SPRC and any additional workshops will be
created in partnership with them. For more information on SPRC,

STIPDA Releases Consensus Recommendations
for Using Hospital Discharge Data for Injury Surveillance
The State and Territorial Injury Prevention Directors Association
(STIPDA) has released a set of recommendations to improve state-based
injury surveillance, entitled Consensus Recommendations for Using
Hospital Discharge Data for Injury Surveillance. This report includes
recommendations from a working group aimed at increasing state injury
prevention programs’ capacity to use statewide hospital discharge
data for injury surveillance.
These standards and recommendations are a critical step towards
a framework for comparing injury-related risk behaviors, injury
morbidity, and injury mortality by selected demographic factors
and by mechanism and intent of injury within and across states.
Implementation of these recommendations will help improve the usefulness
of data for planning injury prevention efforts and facilitating
collaboration between state injury prevention programs. For copies
of the report, visit the STIPDA website at
http://www.stipda.org/.
Workshop 1, discusses prior STIPDA recommendations and
other data sources. For more information go to http://training.sprc.org/.

Workshop 1, "Locating, Understanding,
and Presenting Youth Suicide Data" Co-Sponsored by the American
Association for Suicidology is set to begin in January 2003.
The first step in addressing any public health problem is to access
and examine data to help describe and understand the extent and
nature of the problem. This workshop will introduce some of the
important issues in accessing and analyzing suicide-related data,
which can be used to educate the public, policy makers, and advocates
about the problem of youth suicide. We will review how to obtain
suicide data and translate it into useful formats for different
audiences. If you are interested in participating or if you would like more
information click here http://training.sprc.org/. This workshop is open to anyone involved in suicide

Workshop 2 in development:
Program planning and evaluation for suicide prevention
Workshop 2 in NCSPT's three workshop series is currently in development.
This workshop will provide practical information on comprehensive
suicide prevention planning and evaluation and will give participants
the opportunity to review real state suicide prevention plans. Hands-on
learning will also be a large part of workshop 2 for those people
in the facilitated version. The self-paced version will not include
interaction with a facilitator or other participants. Workshop 2
will be pilot tested in late winter. As always, we will be looking

Understanding, and Presenting youth suicide data) is slated to end
October 18, 2002. The pilot of the self-paced version will also
be ending shortly. After participants complete their post-test evaluations,

Pilot testing of NCSPT Workshop 1 underway
Pilot testing for NCSPT's first workshop
began September 9, 2002 with a group of 15 participants from the
Northeast and around the country. Workshop 1 teaches participants
to identify, interpret, and present youth suicide data for the purpose
of broadening support for suicide prevention programs and policies.
Workshop participants are asked to read and respond to material
using online technology including discussion with other participants
and workshop facilitator, Lloyd Potter, PhD, MPH of EDC.
The pilot test will last for six weeks at which time post-test
results will be completed and compared to the pre-test. The evaluation
and feedback from participants will show how effective the workshop
was at teaching participants about locating, understanding, and
presenting youth suicide data. Feedback will help NCSPT staff to
revise the workshop before it goes national in early 2003.
Pilot testing of the self-paced version of workshop 1 begins September
30, 2002. This version of the workshop is the same as the facilitated
version but does not include any interaction among workshop participants.
NCSPT Guest, Susan Rose Blauner- Success

HOW I STAYED ALIVE
WHEN MY BRAIN WAS TRYING TO KILL ME
One Persons Guide to Suicide Prevention- By Susan Rose Blauner
Blauner, a survivor of multiple suicidal gestures, began experiencing
suicidal thoughts at age fourteen. She discussed her struggle with
feelings and fantasies surrounding suicide with a group of EDC staff
and area prevention practitioners on August 21, 2002. One participant
stated, "I appreciated Susan's candor and it was insightful
to hear from a survivor of several suicide attempts." A quilt
of Massachusetts residents who have died by suicide was displayed
during Ms. Blauner's talk and served as a sober reminder of the
losses experienced by the local community.
Blauner is author of the book she never found during her search
for understanding. For more information, go to howistayedalive.com

Maternal and Child Health Bureau Convenes
Grantees of Distance Learning: Improved distance learning techniques
and ideas for accessibility
On June 26th and June 27th, the Maternal and Child Health Bureau
(MCHB), in conjunction with the Institute for Child Health Policy
(ICHP) convened a meeting of the grantees of distance learning,
in Boston. A representative of NCSPT attended this meeting and presented
its work to the group. The meeting was very helpful and provided
good ideas for distance learning approaches. Another outcome of
the meeting was a recommendation to make sure distance learning
is accessible to all people with regard to differing physical abilities.
NCSPT will be reviewing its website and workshop materials this
summer to ensure equal accessbility for all. Stay tuned for details.
Review of Workshop 1:
On June 20th members of the Northeast Injury Prevention Network
(NEIPN), a regional group of State Injury Prevention Directors,
and representatives from Northeastern states' suicide prevention
planning teams convened for a training on suicide prevention. The
training was sponsored by Harvard Injury Control Research Center
(HICRC) with funding from CDC. Part of the training included a review
of preliminary work done on NCSPT workshop 1. The group provided
very useful information and suggestions for workshop improvement.
NCSPT thanks this group and looks forward to pilot testing workshop
1 this Fall. Stay tuned for more updates about the workshop series
this Summer!
